Now that this statement is over, now we can get back to what is important here boys, Legends of Lambo: Is there a new Sheriff in Green Bay 2.0.
The Green Bay Packers have one of the richest stories of any team in the NFL and are holders of 4 Lombardi trophies, numerous division titles, and the home of two of the greatest gun slinging quarterbacks of all time in Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. Both of these men have won multiple NFL league MVP’s, Favre having 3 and Rodgers having 2. Both men have Super Bowl victories with 1 a piece, Favre having gone to two Super Bowls in back to back season (’96 and ’97) and Rodgers going to one and winning one (2011). The comparisons between these to elite quarterbacks is absolutely astounding, and eerily similar all at the same time… insert laughing emoji face here. It seems like these two are more like a father and son more than two quarterbacks of different generations, with the whole Favre not willing to help Rodgers, and Rodgers calling Favre and old man when they first met, when Green Bay took Rodgers late in the first round of the 2005 draft. When Favre was making his rise to Hall of Fame caliber quarterback he was running around the back field, buying more time, making a big guy miss (except Michael Strahan), and throwing hot dots over the flat Cover 2 cornerback and right past the deep safety on a frozen rope, the likes of which had never been seen before. Favre had this special ability to rise to the occasion, to do things that no one else could when no one else could, like the Monday Night Football game against the Raiders. The day before the game Favre’s father passed away leaving Brett to have to make a quick decision, to play or not to play, Favre played. Favre had lagging issues from breaking his thumb earlier in the same season, all odds stacked against him, no one believing that he would be able to preform, let alone even show up. Favre showed up, he showed up big, bigger than he had ever shown up before, and he did it for his father, the same man who taught him football coached him thru high school and was his best friend, made me cry then and it feels like its gonna make me do it again now. Brett Favre was my dad’s favorite, the reason I became a Packers fan in the first place, its a family thing and in this family Favre is the man, and so is Rodgers. When Rodgers was drafted in 2005 he was projected as the 2nd best quarterback in the draft, only ranked behind Alex Smith. Rodgers did not go number 2 in the draft, he didn’t go number 3 either, he went 24th, and was the last player left in the televised draft room. Rodgers didn’t have it easy finding a college to give him a scholarship, out of high school he was recruited by and attended Butte College, what is a Butte College anyway? After one season there Rodgers was offered a scholarship to Cal where he would becoming the Rodgers we all know. When Rodgers arrived to Green Bay the reports began right away of issues between Rodgers and Favre, and how wouldn’t there be issues, Favre doesn’t want to leave the Packers, no one wants to see Father Time coming for them, but it comes for us all. As Favre clearly wouldn’t be happy with his team after drafting a top college ranked quarterback who is clearly there to take his job, the quarterback competition and controversy has begun, and as we all know now, Favre’s days were numbered in Green Bay. Rodgers simply showed that he had it, he could make every single throw, he could make the same type of throws that Favre was able to make, and that is a very rare thing in the NFL’s history. Many have had cannon arms, many have been able to make tight window throws, but very few are able to make every single throw period. As the playing time went on for Rodgers he showed that yes he can make the throws that Favre can, so why pick him over Favre, the legend, the proven player? Simple, Rodgers doesn’t turn the ball over, Rodgers is precise, accurate, smart, and has that special little intangible that Favre also had, making both of these Packer quarterback something special. Now, 2021, in the 2020 playoffs the Aaron Rodgers lead Green Bay Packers are the number 1 seed in the NFC and hold home field advantage, Rodgers MVP of the season, and playing the absolute best he has yet in his career. The question remains, who is the greatest Packer quarterback of all time? Is it Favre, is it Rodgers, it a pick ‘em at this point right now, but maybe not for long, because these Green Bay Packers look good, real good, and Rodgers is playing at a level few have ever played at, and if he can keep it up, get a couple breaks, and make all the right decisions then maybe just maybe the Packers win another Super Bowl this season, Rodgers gets his 2nd ring, and dethrones Mr. Brett Favre as the top man in Green Bay, other than Vince Lombardi of course.
With the 2020 NFL Playoffs underway there are many different stories lines going on that are rather interesting to the history of the NFL. Tom Brady has a chance with the Buc's victory yesterday over the Washington Football team, to become not just the greatest quarterback of all time, but possibly the greatest athlete of all times if he wins the Super Bowl this season, moving Michael Jordan out of the top stop with his 6 titles and Brady would take over with 7. However, to me, being a life long, multi-generational Packers fan, there is a little bit of a better story going on in the NFL today, that story is who is the greatest Green Bay Packer quarterback of all time, Bart Star, no no no, we have moved past the days of 3 yards and a could of dust NFL, and are now in the era of the forward pass. The real debate is between Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, which one of these Hall of Fame passers will go down as the greatest Packer of them all, and rest the bust in Canton right next to Packer legend and Hall of Famer Vince Lombardi. We all have seen the greatness by both of these quarterbacks, we have seen both men win a Super Bowl as the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, yet Favre went to 2 straight Super Bowl, winning the first one and loosing the John Elway's Bronco's the following season. Rodger's has gone to 1 Super Bowl and won it against the high powered Pittsburg Steeler's defense while loosing his top cornerback Charles Woodson at halftime. When Favre retired from the NFL he held every single quarterback passing record there was, both good and bad, touchdowns and interceptions, Favre took multiple teams to the playoffs and had them playing like legit Super Bowl contenders. Rodgers currently has the Packers playing as the top NFC team in the 2020 season, he has Davonte Adams looking like he may well be the next Jerry Rice running around out there on the frozen tundra of Lambo field. To me, there is no clear cut number one Green Bay Packer quarterback of all time, right now, as of the 2020 season, but that could all easily change, and the way it is looking in the NFC play off race, it may be almost a lock to happen. If A-A-ron Rodgers, the new age gunslinger of the Pack goes out, balls out, throws touchdowns everywhere, rushes for one or two maybe and throws for a whole bunch of yards, yep, like is has been doing ALL season long, just ask Pat McAfee, another Rodgers fanatic and amazing podcast host. Rodgers is well on his way this season to making this hypothetical conversation a reality, the Packers have a first round bye, being that they were the best team in the NFC this year and the only true test for the to get to Super Sunday will be if Rodgers can out duel the great and G.O.A.T Tom Brady in the NFC championship, pending the Buc's can win another playoff game next week. Rodgers will have another advantage this year with the road to the Super Bowl for the NFC having to go thru the cold and frozen tundra that is Green Bay, Wisconsin, and the Buc's, well lets just say they will have to put down the sun screen and pick up the hot hands hand warmers.
